Hello and welcome to my December 2020 reading status! The final reading status of the “stay at home” year that 2020 has been.
Since the previous reading status in November I finished only one book – a result that is aligned with the increased workload. There is also an unfinished book that was quite difficult to put aside – you know, the sunk costs.
Fortunately, this month I continued with my knitting endeavour 🧶 I worked a lot on a fluffy cardigan, hopefully it will be ready just in time for Christmas!
Currently reading
I am reading The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste (my review). It is a historical fiction story about Mussolini’s 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. The focus of the story is on the not-talked-about contribution of women soldiers in this conflict, the women who fought alongside men.
I am very interested in this book not only because of the intriguing story, but also because I want to find out more about Africa’s history – unfortunately my knowledge about it is very limited.
Finished reading
The only book I finished reading is Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (my review). It is a collection of stories about Nordic gods, giants, elves and other beings. At the center of most stories is the famous trio of gods: the all-father Odin, the mischievous Loki, and the mightiest Thor.
Reading Norse Mythology reminded me of my childhood, when I was fascinated by the Greek mythology.
The book I did not finish is Love in Amsterdam by Nicolas Freeling. It is an eARC I requested via Edelweiss and despite my initial enthusiasm, it was quite disappointing. I read about 50% of it, and then I chose to spend my time reading other books.
Trying to go through this book was one of the factors that almost got me into a reading slump 😦 Do you also feel guilty when abandoning a book mid-way?
Reading next
Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami is next! I’ve been waiting to read this book for months now. I heard read it is not the best of Murakami, but I am anyway looking forward to getting immersed in a big big book. I have no idea what the story is about, and I have no intention to find out before reading it 😀
If the Christmas holiday is as quiet as I imagine it, I hope to also read a non-fiction book until January 2021 – Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. It is a book about the how the world is mostly designed for men and the female population is systematically ignored.
